Castor oil typically appears in shades ranging from pale yellow to amber. It possesses a low freezing point, a high flash point, and high viscosity. Furthermore, it exhibits strong solvency, capable of dissolving various chemical substances and participating in chemical reactions.

Castor oil is not suitable for use in the food industry due to its toxicity. However, it serves as a vital ingredient in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and industrial sectors. It is widely utilized in daily chemical products, lubricants, various industrial surfactants, and textile finishing agents.

Given the high oil content and high viscosity of castor seeds, the selection of oil press equipment must adhere to specific criteria: resistance to high temperatures, tolerance for high viscosity, and robust structural strength capable of generating high pressure.

Currently, screw oil presses are the most commonly used equipment on the market for extracting castor oil. This is because the materials used in screw presses are typically highly durable and capable of withstanding high temperatures. Furthermore, screw presses offer adjustable pressing stages and pressure settings; crucially, the design incorporates a specific clearance between the screw shaft and the pressing cage, which is ideally suited to facilitate the efficient flow and discharge of high-viscosity oils.

1. Raw Material Pre-treatment

Before getting into the caster seed oil extraction machine, castor seeds must undergo pre-treatment, which involves the use of vibrating screens and destoners to remove stones, soil, weeds, and other impurities from the raw material. This serves a dual purpose: protecting the oil press machinery from damage and enhancing the purity of the extracted castor oil. Following this initial cleaning, the seeds must be processed through a specialized hulling machine to crack and remove their outer shells. This step is critical because castor seed shells are extremely hard; if left intact, they would damage the screw oil press and cause the extracted oil to turn dark.

2. Softening

After pre-treatment, the castor seeds are subjected to a softening process using low-temperature machinery to prepare them for subsequent pressing.

3. Pressing

Once softened, the castor seeds are fed directly into the caster seed oil extraction machine. Under the intense pressure generated within the internal pressing chamber, crude castor oil is extracted.

4. Filtration

Immediately after caster seed oil extraction machine, the crude oil can be passed directly through an oil filter to remove impurities. Alternatively-or if immediate filtration is not feasible-the oil may need to be heated; in this case, the temperature should be maintained at approximately 80°C to reduce viscosity and facilitate more effective filtration.

5. Refining

When castor oil is intended for industrial or pharmaceutical applications, it must undergo a comprehensive refining process involving degumming, deacidification, decolorization, and deodorization-with deodorization being a particularly critical step.

Castor seed cake that has undergone detoxification treatment can be used in animal feed applications; with a protein content ranging from 30% to 40% and a balanced amino acid profile, it serves as a viable substitute for soybean meal.
